Abstract: River shoreline is of great significance for the social development and needs to be effectively protected and rationally used. In this paper, taking river shoreline management requirements as goal, combining national and local laws and administrative regulations, we studied development and zoning of river shoreline functional area in Sichuan Province in terms of river shoreline width. Then, the river shoreline of Tuojiang River basin was zoned. The results showed that: ① the width of shoreline was defined between outer edge of river and embankment. Shorelines of different widths of 20, 50, 200 m were divided according to utilization of shoreline and their main functions. ② Shoreline of Jianyang to Ziyang section was divided into 10 functional zones, including 2 conservation area with total length of 31.24 km and area of 0.64 km2, 4 reserved areas with total length of 73.71 km and area of 1.47 km2, 3 controlled utilization areas with total length of 28.29 km and area of 0.85 km2 and 1 developing area with total length of 7.68 km and area of about 0.16 km2.
