Abstract: The level of protection and utilization of the Three Gorges Reservoir(TGR) confluence zone(CZ) plays an important role in local social and economic development and ecological environment protection.To this end, we firstly proposed a rule for delineating boundaries of a CZ based on its natural and social properties.Then, by using statistical analysis methods and remote sensing technologies, the natural, socio-economical and utilization statuses of the CZs in the TGR were analyzed in general.Furthermore, three typical CZs with gradient shoreline utilization intensities were selected for detecting current problems in the protection and utilization of CZs with field survey data.The main problems were as follows, unreasonable infrastructure layout along shorelines, low utilization efficiency, lack of shorelines planning, etc.To treat these problems properly, some corresponding improvement measurements were suggested.The results of this work are expected to be helpful for shoreline utilization and protection rationally and efficiently in CZs of the TGR.
