Abstract: The ancient Chinese water cultural heritages contain abundant historical cultural value and concepts of ecological water development, which has far-reaching significance on construction of modern city. The vigorous construction of sponge city in recent years provides a new opportunity for the protection and utilization of water cultural heritages. To improve the protection system for water cultural heritage, this paper clarifies the definition and value of the water cultural heritage and the significance to the sponge city. We study the challenges and problems in the protection of water cultural heritage in sponge city construction and the mutual benefit relationship between them through questionnaire survey and case analysis. Furthermore, we put forward effective strategies from aspects of perfecting the system of policies and regulations, improving departmental institutions and coordination mechanism, establishing multi-level planning system, formulating the special protection plans to provide references for the construction of the sponge city and the protection of the water cultural heritage
